Call the right department, the first time.
A working directory for SBA, Treasury, and IRS contacts — organized by what you’re trying to do, not by federal org chart.
Three things to know before you call.
Federal call centers are not built for short conversations. The borrowers who get the most useful answers are the ones who walk in prepared.
Have your numbers ready.
Loan number, business legal name, EIN, and the exact name on the loan documents. Reps cannot pull your file without identifiers.
Document everything.
Date, time, agent name, and a reference number for every call. If you call again later, this is the only way to continue the conversation.
When in doubt, hang up.
If you’re transferred more than twice, end the call and try again at off-peak times — early mornings or mid-week. Different agents give different answers.
Four situations, four numbers.
